There is a severe diabetic complication that people with type 1 diabetes can suffer from and it is called ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is the result of extremely high blood glucose accompanied by too much acid in the blood.
If you notice the prefix of the word is “Kato” then you will realize that this refers to “ketones” which is a substance that the body creates as fat is being broken down during ketoacidosis. The word “acid” within the term is there because it means that your blood has become acidic due to the existence of ketones.
Quite often the existence of ketoacidosis is what alerts doctors to initially diagnose a person with type 1 diabetes. But most of the time a person who is experiencing ketoacidosis already knows that they suffer from diabetes. The average age of a diabetic who shows signs of ketoacidosis is typically above the age of 40.
Why does ketoacidosis typically show up in type 1 diabetics as opposed to type 2 diabetics?
Recent studies have concluded that the reason why ketoacidosis happens mostly with type 1 diabetics is because there is no insulin within their bodies except what they are injecting into themselves as medication. Type 2 diabetics, on the other hand, have a least some insulin running through their bodies already even if that insulin is not totally active.
If you have diabetes and are over the age of 40 them below we have some symptoms that you may want to look out for:
1. Extremely fast-paced rapid breathing: Your body can become so acidic that the first defense is for it to try to rid the acid through the lungs. This rapid breathing which results in the acid being blown into the lungs is also known as “Kassmaul Breathing”, which is named after the first person who had the experience.
2. Vomiting: Vomiting and/or nausea is a common experience due to the buildup of the acids within your body. Too much buildup of acid also creates a loss of other important substances and fluids that your body must have in order to remain stable.
3. Experiencing drowsiness and tiredness: This is also another common symptom due to ketoacidosis. You are experiencing extreme tiredness because the brain is surrounded by a very thick layer of blood.
4. Fatigue and weakness: In order to have energy your muscles need fuel. This fuel comes in the form of glucose. Due to ketoacidosis, your body is unable to get its fuel from the necessary glucose needed, which results in feeling burnt out and weak.
